Rare, first edition, hardcover book in good condition. This book was written at a time of turbulence in South Africa towards the end of the second Boer War and attempts to present facts about South Africa and the problems of settlement and as per the preface, several reforms are suggested for South Africa’s future success.  The book covers the land, the people, the history, new lands of promise and disappointment, the economic future and the settlement. Fold-out colour map of South Africa as frontispiece. There is a list of principal events at the end of the book and an index.  The author was the first administrator of Mashonaland. This is a VERY RARE book. Externally, publisher's red hardboards with illustration of a sunrise and black title lettering to the front board.  Black faded lettering to the spine. Faded spine and some damp staining to front and rear board. Boards firm and book is firmly bound. Internally, hinges show some cracking. Pages are generally clean. Photos provided reflect the condition in addition to the above description. Overall condition is good
