1st edition, first impression, hardcover copy of The Birds of South Africa by Dr Austin Roberts, published on 8th June 1940. A second impression was published on 17th December of the same year. A comprehensive guide to South African birds with detailed descriptions and 56 colour plates of birds illustrated by Norman C.K. Lighton. The book is considered to be a foundational work in South African ornithology and was the first fully illustrated guide to South African birds, covering over 1,000 species with maps and habits. First edition copies of this seminal work are scarce and highly prized by collectors. Externally, original blue cloth covers with gilt titling on the spine and measurement ruler in gilt on the back cover. No dustjacket. There is foxing to the page edges. Internally, there is some browning to the back pages of the illustrated plates and seems to be due to the type of paper used but otherwise this is in very good condition.
Please see photos provided as these serve to reflect the condition in conjunction with details provided. Overall condition is very good.
