Rare 1st Edition, hardcover landscape book. The first edition of a very scarce book, complete with 20 chromolithograph plates of watercolour drawings by William Whitelock Lloyd. William Whitelock Lloyd was a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment. He served through the Zulu campaign and received a medal. The drawings depict the life of an officer in barracks, on board ship, and in the field during the Xhosa and Zulu Wars, and sketches of a campaign in India (North-West Frontier). The illustrations are recognised for their realism, historical accuracy, and occasional touches of humor regarding the difficulties of campaign life. Externally, publisher's original pictorial hardback covers, in very good condition with some markings to the boards and shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, there is some foxing to some pages and age related toning. An exceptionally good copy in very good condition.
