Harry Wolhuter was a former member of Steinaecker’s Horse corps during the Anglo-Boer War and was appointed as a game ranger in the Sabi Game Reserve (later Kruger National Park) in 1902. The book tells the story of his days in the bush, his efforts to preserve the wild life and his encounters with dangerous animals, poachers, tourists, the dogs and horses who served him and his wartime experiences. His account of being attacked by lions is a legendary tale of courage. There are numerous illustrations throughout by C.T. Astley-Maberly. Externally, publisher's original green cloth covered boards with gilt embossed titling on the front cover and spine. The inside title page has an inscription and on the page stating this is a first edition, there is the bold signature of the author and the place he signed the book, White River, on the 27th Dec 1948. Internally, there is no foxing and the pages are clean and bright. Overall a very good copy.
