Rare, first edition hardcover in very good condition.First UK edition published in 1901 and translated by H.A. Nesbitt. According to the translator’s preface, “there is no book in existence which presents so complete an account of Madagascar, the Mascarenes and the smaller islands of the Ocean to the East and South East of Africa, as this work of Professor Keller”. Contents include details on the history, discovery and exploration of the islands, climate etc. Three coloured maps including a fold out map, of Madagascar, at the rear and 64 illustrations. A very good copy! Externally, the publisher's original red cloth covered boards with gilt stamped title and engraving on the front cover and gilt stamped abbreviated title and author on the spine. Spine has faded mildly, with covers still bright. Binding is tight. Internally, some foxing to the outer edges and some foxing to the foldout map of Madagascar. Else pages are generally clean. Photos provided reflect the condition in addition to the above description. Overall condition is very good
