First Edition, Special Subscriber Edition. The rarer subscriber edition was not available from ordinary booksellers at the time. This set is made up of two volumes in six divisions in the larger format. In Darkest Africa, is Stanley’s famous account of the 1887 - 1889 expedition to Lake Albert, to relieve the Emin Pasha, who was governor of equatorial Sudan. In this expedition, Stanley became the first European to discover the great snow-capped range of the Ruwenzori Mountains and located the lake, which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza. The set is complete with three, colour printed, foldout maps and there are numerous illustrations, maps and plans. A superb collection of books, and exceptionally rare to find a complete set in very good condition.
Externally, all books in the set are bound in the publisher's original red cloth covered boards with pictorial cover design. The covers and spines have gilt titling, with the publisher's black crest on the back covers. Minor shelf wear to the covers and spine extremities. Spines are slightly sunned with bumping to the ends. All covers and spines are in very good condition and tightly bound. Internally, the text blocks are generally clean with light toning and occasional foxing. All books have the booksellers, small sticker attached to the rear pastedown. Photos provided reflect the condition in addition to the above description. Overall condition is very good .
