Scarce, true first edition, first impression of Deneys Reitz's memoir about his experiences during the Anglo-Boer War. Publisher's red cloth binding with gilt titles on spine. Map endpapers (which in later impressions were replaced with a fold-out map at rear). Externally, publisher's original cloth covered boards with some minor shelf wear and markings to cover and spine. Binding is tight. Internally, some tanning and mild foxing to the outer pages. The book is inscribed to Mrs Greville and signed by Abe Bailey, the South African diamond and gold magnate and politician.
