Rare first edition, hardcover, in very good condition. Cetshwayo's Dutchman Being the Private Journal of a White Trader in Zululand During the British Invasion. Translated and Edited with Preface and Notes by Right Rev. J.W. Colenso, Bishop of Natal. Illustrated with a B&W engraved frontis portrait of Cetshwayo (taken from a photograph at Capetown by J.E. Bruton.) Externally, publisher's original green cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine with gilt banded decorations at the ends, black decorative banding to front and blind embossed on rear. Small gilt floral design to front. Professional repairs made to cover and binding, with spine rebacked and relaid, neatly repaired at ends of spine, also to corners of boards. Some very light rubbing to cloth on spine and rear. Internally, later brown endpapers, some minor tanning to half title, some minor foxing to inside pages. New tissue guard added to frontis plate. There is a stamp to the corner of main title page “British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society.” Minor stain to bottom corner of pages 26-48. Photos provided reflect the condition in addition to the above description. Overall condition is very good
